How should I place a rectangular rug under a horseshoe sectional?

I’m trying to figure out how to place a standard rectangular rug under a horseshoe shaped sectional with an oval coffee table making up the center.
Should the rug go under the whole sectional with room to spare behind it? That would have to be a very large rug.
Can the sectional be only partway under the rug?
I’m thinking about a persian without a medallion here if that helps paint a picture.

double sided tape is the same as rug tape. tried that already.

37 year old pony 13.1 sore is on the withers he lost weight in very cold winter trying to get it back on him with extra feed. His rugs fit, but they all rub as his shoulders are skinny at the moment. At the moment he isn’t wearing a rug most of the time as it is summer.
Thanks. Going with the sudocrem at the moment cos it stops the sun from getting to it also. Going to get him a vest that goes over his withers.
