How can I clean a large cotton fabric rug?(It has dust and dirt stains)?
I purchased this large rug at IKEA, I think its made of wooven cotton, but Im not sure (it doesnt have the tag anymore). Its really dirty, but I’m not able to put it in the laundry machine, its to big.
The rug is this light cream color, so stains are very visible. Its got this weird stains, but they are made of dirt ,not of another substance. I already tried cleaning with the vacuum, but it doesnt remove them, the rug still looks dirty. Any ideas on how to clean it?
The size is probably 150 cm x 200 cm

I dose my stains up with dishwashing liquid & throw the rug over the truck. Then I wait an hour or so to let the soap loosen the stain & I hose the h*ll out of it with a power washer. Then i have to let it sit for 3 days to dry, unless it is hot or windy!I don’t go anyplace much during this time. must admit, I would simply put it outside on paving, wet it with a hose on power spray, spray some cleaning liquid (spray ‘n wipe kind) on it and brush it over with a wet rag or brush. Then use hose to clean off. Hang over washing line to dry.
A small rug I have always comes up as new when I do this!
Don’t forget to shake well before bringing in and vaccuum to freshen fibres. tanja b
Laundry mats, at least the better ones do, have large over-sized washers for bigger items. The only problems is you haven’t told us how big it is, so you may want to go and rent a vacuum steamer and try that first. ihcuids
if there is a laundromat near by, see if they have an industrial size washer & dryer & you can try to wash it there.
Or take it to a dry cleaner. belligerent assistant
My solution is very similiar to the first one; however, I hang my large rug over a fence. I use Simple Green and it not only cleans it beautifully but also freshens up and odors it may have. rocknrollerchick
I used to have a rug like that. The first few years I had it I would hang it out over my clothesline and spray it with the hose using a gardening attachment, that instead of fertilizer I filled with a mixture of water and laundry soap. Once that was done I sprayed it with plain water to rinse out all the soap. After a few washes with hose it eventually came clean. I did this about 2 times a year. That rug lasted almost 10 years. I finally got rid of it when we got a new carpet. Of course you have to do this on a nice day so that you can leave the rug on the clothesline ot air-dry when you are finished. discouragedmom
