I agree with the scratching post diversion technique. It has worked for me, though we just got a new cat and I've ceased caring about the rug now.

And though this was unasked for, I can't help myself -- I cleaned and redecorated/updated my boyfriend's place a few years ago. I am now moving out and face the conundrum of what I can take without being a jerk. I hope you saved everything you replaced so you can do the old switcheroo in case things go south. I can't just take all the curtains, half the furniture, and leave the walls bare. Please be careful! (And good luck, perhaps it will work out for you) LunaPurr

Just pick the cat up whenever he starts to scratch it. Or get a spray bottle, fill it up with water, and spray him if he scratches it. He'll learn he's not allowed to do that after awhile. But, sometimes, you just can't stop them. Besides, it's just a rug. The cat and your boyfriend are more important than a rug, no matter how valuable. dexter111344

First, make sure you keep the cat's nails trimmed. Also, PetSmart has been selling a couple of things to help with cat scratching, here is the link to one of them (it's just a rubber cover you put on the nails and there is another that isn't online but is at many pet stores, it's a rubber glue you apply and it dries to the tips and makes it to where they can't scratch furniture or anything and damage it- my parent's use it for their many cats and it works great):
And they do come in white to make it not so obvious they have them on :) Madison

Use a spray bottle and when she scratches anything you don't want her to, spray her. Cat's hate the water but it doesn't hurt them. She will learn after a while to stay away and scratch only the things you allow her to. Ashley

Get a scratching post with sisal rope on it. EVERY time she goes for the rug, pick her up, with love, and take her to the scratching post. Here's the catch - rub the scratching post with catnip. Essentially, the cat gets stoned on the catnip at the scratching post. She'll soon come to associate the post with getting stoned, and go to the post. I did this with mine and he never went anywhere else. It may take a few days, and you have to monitor them carefully to reinforce the idea, but it works. faireminded1

if possible buy a cheaper version of the rug and make this the cats rug and allow her a rug of her own to scratch on,
You could also buy her a scratching post or a few toys catnip felt mice and little felt balls are great cat toys she is just playful and being a cat but you can train her to scratch on her own mat maybe by placing it in an area where she sleeps or eats janette

your cat probably doesnt know that it isnt allowed to scratch the rug. when you see it happen then you could slighlty punish it to make sure it know that it is not allowed. alos you could just keep the cat out of the kitchen so it would not be near the rug. ~*~i!*BoOK woRm*!i~*~
