My cat has been peeing on my area rug in the living room. Recently it peed on our guest bed as well. How do I get it to stop? Is there any spray, herb, etc that I purchase that will detour the cat from such areas?

If your cat is male and has not been neutered, this is normal behavior.

Even if your cat has been neutered, once an object smells like urine, the cat continues to associate it with urine… in other words, the object is essentially cursed. magnutc

Cats often spray…(which you may think is urine)…if they are not fixed….I have never had a problem with one of my cats spraying after being fixed. c murk

I’ve heard that bitter apple spray is a great solution. Cats hate it and they’ll hate getting on their paws and such. They’ll never go near anything that is sprayed with it again. Jackie A

cayenne pepper, lightly sprinkle it in areas you dont want the cat to get near. Thats another way to keep your cat from eating your plants. Or anything that has a banana smell (cats HATE bananas!) ckridinfatdownsth

what ever you do, do not punish the cat. this only makes it nervous and will end up spraying even more. Lock it up where ever you have the litter. Make sure the litter is clean. they dont like dirty litter. when you see it pee next time. simply pick it up take it to the litter box and put it inside. get his paws and rub it on the litter so he knows what it is. I did this about 3 times with our female cat. she never once had another problem outside the litter. marcelinom

Well, I was researching this question myself, and to be truthful, I don’t like the answers. Cats are territorial and emotional and if things don’t go their way, they will let you know by peeing all over your belongings. I have two cats aged 10 and 13. They have marked things when I moved into a new house but thats pretty much it. But since I have moved in with my boyfriend they have been out of hand.
They pee on our dirty laundy in the basket, they pee on the floor, in corners, and now I am expecting a baby in two weeks and they have sprayed all over the new stroller and car seat. That threw me over the edge. Every site told me I have to be considerate of their feelings, and to give them extra attention and loving. They say to retrain them to use the litter box, and to NEVER punish them. How can I snuggle and love my cat when all I smell is their gross pee everyhwere. No one wants a cat who pees. I love my cats to death, but if they don’t stop, I would put them to sleep. If it gets bad enough, you will know what to do. bomb
