How to keep a cat from clawing up carpet?

(Note: Declawing is NOT an option for us!)

My cat is always clawing at the carpet. At night, I have my door closed and she always wants to come sleep on my bed with me. She’ll continuously claw at the carpet by the door until I open it.
The carpet looks terrible and there is a spots with absolutely not carpet now, because of her.

What can I do to keep her from clawing up carpet? It’s ridiculously frustrating at this point.

well first get ur carpet fixed then find the spots where she claws the carpet the most and put double sided tape there. It works on my cats. After a while she will know not to do it and u can take the tape off. and if she does it again just put it back on. Hope it helps! Nujwee

Let her in. That’s what I’d do. I sorta love you for saying declawing isn’t an option. It shouldn’t be for any cat. scrgrl

I don’t know why declawing isn’t an option, but I just wanted to let you know (I’m so not trying to push you) that vets use lasers to declaw cats now, which reduces pain and possible infection. Trust me, I know it sounds horrible (and the procedure really used to be because vets would just take nail clippers and clip nails past were the knuckle might be (if compared to humans)), but if you only do the front claws, they will still have back claw for protection.

If declawing really, really is not an option. Cat scratching posts work wonders. Also, see if there is one thing in particular (besides your carpet) that she loves to scratch and don’t bother her about scratching it. We have an old office chair that our cat loves, and she will only scratch THAT chair or her posts… Blank

She’s most likely scratching the carpet in the hopes that you’ll open the door and let her in. If leaving the door open so that she can sleep in your room at night isn’t an option, then you need to purchase a thick pvc mat (the type that’s used to protect carpet from heavy wear). Place this in front of the door, or if it’s thin enough, slide it under the door so that it covers carpet on both sides. Cats dislike scratching on smooth or shiny surfaces, so it should deter her from scratching there.

Bear in mind, that if she is doing this to get your attention or be allowed in the bedroom, then she may resort to other tactics such as scratching elsewhere or meowing.

Very pleased to hear that declawing is not an option. Only wish more people were as compassionate towards cats. michele_cat_cyprus

Thank you for not declawing her.

Here is a list of items you can use to stop a cat from scratching:
A bottle/can with something noisy in it
Air (I use a balloon pump)
    Aluminum foil
Anything citrus smelling (spray/rub in on whatever they’re starching)
    Double sided tape
Dumb Cat Anti-Marking & Cat Spray Remover (Spray-Petco-This one is for urine)
Four Paws Cat and Kitten Repellent (Spray-Petco)
Four Paws Keep Off Indoor and Outdoor Dog and Cat Repellent (Spray-Petco)
    Fresh Kitty Furniture Protectors
    Gingerroot
    Packaging tape
Pet Botanics Bitter End Training Aid (Spray-Petco)
Pet Organics No Scratch! for Cats (Spray-Petco)
Pet Organics No-Mark for Cats (Spray-Petco-This one is for urine)
Pet Organics No-Stay Furniture Spray for Cats (Spray-Petsmart)
    Scratching post
Simple Solution Indoor/Outdoor Repellent for Dogs and Cats (Spray-Petco)
    Softpaws
Spray that stops them (there all different kinds)
Spray that stops them (there all different kinds-just go to petco.com type in “scratch spray”)
Trim their nails back once a week
    Water bottle spray

Also if you have a scratching post & your cat is not using it you can get some catnip & rub it on there or they sell catnip spray. Also it might not be big enough. A scratching post needs to be as tall as the cat (about 32”). Erin P
