How to remove vomit smell from carpet?

My roommate vomited in our dorm and didn’t make it to the trash bin. We tried using carpet cleaner, then laundry detergent to get rid of the smell but neither worked. I read online that club soda will bleach the carpet and baking soda will clog vacuum cleaners. Any other suggestions as to how to get rid of it entirely?
Keep in mind, I’m in a college dorm and I’m a poor college student so I can’t really call a carpet cleaning service.

You can rent a steam cleaner for about $25. Other than that you just have to scrub it. Baking soda never clogs my vacume. You could try febreeze or scented carpet powder too. You wont ever be able to totally get rid of it but that might cover up the smell. ~*Mama-of-Two*~

Bucket of hot water and laundry detergent. Use a mop to scrub it down good. Then do the same with just hot water. Dry it out with fan. mike p
