How to get a cat to stop urinating on the floor/rug?

Our male cat (4 years) steps by any of the three litter boxes he shares with his sister and decides to urinate or defecate on teh floor or rug. What can I do to get him to stop? I have a young son that will be crawling in the coming months and this could get ugly?

How do you get rid of cat’s urine smells from carpets?

Our cat is 15 years old and lately he pees on our carpets. As you know cat’s urine reeks to high heaven. We tried bicarb soda and carpet spot cleaning products but the smell remains.
Anyone has a good suggestion beside selling the house or replacing the carpets?
