Juliet can sit up! asked:

My two cats started peeing on the edge of one of our rugs. We have since gotten rid of the cats, and I took the rug outside, to let it air out a bit. It rained unexpectedly, and the rug got wet. I brought it into my outside hallway, and it reeks of cat pee. Is there any way I can get the smell out? It’s so gross! And I love this rug.

vetty asked:

I have a cream rug, which I love, but it doesn’t fit in the washing machine, and it has a few old marks on it – dirt mainly I think, though possibly a drop or two of red wine as well! Are there any products I can use / ways of cleaning it to bring it up a bit nicer?

How long does it normally take for a carpet to dry after steam cleaning?

Aaron M asked:

I had the carpets in two rooms and a hallway steam cleaned yesterday. One room is completely dry, and so is the hallway, the other is in the corner of the house and is still considerably wet after 24 hours. I can’t open the window in that room so the ventilation is pretty poor. I’ve turned on the space heater an hour ago, it seems to be helping somewhat. I’m worried about mould growing. What is the normal drying time for a carpet cleaning?
Update: Oh, I didn’t know that about the heater, thanks, I’ve shut it off. I have one fan going in there, and am turning the AC on now. I don’t have something like a dehumidifier though. Also, the reason I can’t open the window is there is no screen and many bugs outside the window who’d love to get into a room with a nice damp rug.
The AC and fans worked, it’s almost dry! Thanks everyone.

I have a new rug, 6 months old at this point, that constantly sheds. There’s ‘rug dust’ all over the house. It sticks to my daughters feet and even ends up in her diapers. Does anyone have suggestions on how to minimize this problem. We love the rug and do not want to get rid of it.

Brainy Smurfette asked:

I’m looking for a rug with red as the main color. It needs to be contemporary/modern with a geometric or abstract design. I’ve tried Target, Pier 1, Pottery Barn, Ikea, West Elm and even Walmart and neither of them have a rug that I just love. Does anyone know of a cool contemporary home store (not on the list) that may have what I’m looking for?

Will vinegar alter the color of my carpet? Any other ways to de-odorize a burbur carpet?

stephanie asked:

I have been told to use vinegar to get the dog’s peepee smell out of my carpet after I clean the area. Every cleaner I have tried doesn’t not completely get rid of the smell, so I want to further de-odorize. I am worried that vinegar will bleach the carpet, though. I am also not a big fan of the smell of vinegar. I have a window above the area I need to de-odorize and two fans to work with, so I can probably manage to get most of the vinegar aroma out the window, but I would rather work with something not as repelling-smelling. Any suggestions? I would really appreciate it! Thank you!
I would LOVE to tear up the carpet, but I live in military housing and they won’t let us do that. I have asked the supervisor at the housing office if there is a way we can arrange to replace the carpet and padding in that area, but I will be charged over $500 dollars to replace an area no bigger than 3×7. Until I can afford to do that, I will have to find other ways. I have a steam cleaner for carpets that works really well at getting the urine out of the carpet, but it still smells so badly. Baking soda is difficult to work with on a burbur carpet, it’s hard to tell when it is all vacuumed up, and when used as a paste, it gets stuck between fibers and when it doesn’t come out completely it dries hard and makes the carpet feel like sandpaper in spots. I prefer to not work with it.

I have 2 cats, and they love to dig their nails into the carpets.. They pick and scratch all the time. They are slowly ruining my carpet. How do I make them stop? I do not want to get them declawed, but I do trim their nail. They have 2 scratch posts, but still choose the carpet.. Any suggestions?
