We just put hardwood flooring down on our entire main floor. It’ s beautiful now, but I need to put a carpet down that is durable and waterproof to a point. We have a huge entrance with a16′ ceiling and I don’t want to make it look tacky, but I can’t help thinking practical ‘cuz I don’t want it to be ruined in a month. We live in a cold climate with lots of snow in winter and rain in spring.

Sisal is good, it can be a little scratchy but its very hardwearing for stairs, hallways, etc (your ‘high traffic’ areas). I think it’s water repellent too.

Not good if you have cats though, as they may think “Oh how wonderful, the world is my scratching post”. Amazingwoo

Ballard Designs has great indoor/outdoor area rugs that are made from a polypropelene fiber that looks and feels like a natural fiber like sisal. They claim that you can rinse them with a garden hose. I’ve never had to do that with mine, though. We’ve had it for about two years in our entry (only vacuumed it) and it still looks great. They have a lot of cute prints, as well.

I’d also recommend making an area rug out of FLOR brand carpet tiles. The “housepet” line is coarse enough to clean off shoes but still looks nice and comes in bright colors. They also claim their products can be rinsed off. ginafly
