My husband has mild allergies. We have two young children, so I opt for carpet in areas where it is possible. Are there certain types of carpet that are best for someone with allergies?

Anything synthetic vs natural pile. I suspect though that it is not the fibers, but the allergens that become trapped in the fibers that cause the problems for your Hubby. Invest in a good vaccum like a Dyson, and purchase a good air cleaner with HEPA filters. Polecat

Try hard wood floors covered with area rugs. These can be easily aired or washed but will still protect children from hurting themselves. The floors themselves won’t collect much dust as long as they are vacuumed often. Depending on the finish you can also clean the floors with damp towels which trap dust better. Also, when your kids get older you can put away some of the rugs and enjoy your beautiful hardwood floor.
    Good Luck! Galetia K

Synthetic fibers are better for allergies than natural fibers like wool. Vacuum frequently and steam clean when needed to keep carpets clean. You may want to use a dehumidifier if you are in a humid climate as well.

You also may want to consider a vacuum with a HEPA filter. It is stated that it will remove up to 99% of dust and allergens.

Also, check the Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) stats that should be on the label.
