Why are the cats peeing on the front rug but also using their litter box?

Bella asked:

I have two cats. And starting a few months ago, the rug in front of door gets peed on. And I also watched my male cat today pee on my heating pad! Their cat box is clean and they use it regularly. We have ruled out medical issues. Nothing has changed in our household except that I am pregnant. But I cannot imagine that would make them pee on rug and heating pad. Why if they are not sick and they are using their litter box would they continue to pee on the rug??????

So frustrated.

That is insane.. do they know where the litter box is? Maybe they couldn’t get to it in time. My kitten pooped in my bed the first week i had her but it was only b/c she didnt know where the litter box was. MadHatter

they are probably marking their territory. they sense something is different. i don’t know why on the rug and heating pad vs. the floor.
    sorry if it didn’t help

    btw: congratulations …..

A bunch of reasons They know the place by smell as their pee spot ( so pout perfume or cleanser on it); Sometimes they know you hate it (no solution there); fi the cat box isn’t cleaned as often as they like, they will go somewhere else (clean the box daily, replace the litter twice a week); cats are lazy and the box may be too far away (put a cat box in the pee rug room and put the cat in it) Ashley Jeanne

Perhaps there’s a strange cat in the neighborhood and they’re smelling him when the door is open. I had a cat start to do this once and it turned out the litter I had bought was a little harsher and hurt his feet. Back to the finer grind and everything was OK.

Clean up the area and spray with white vinegar. That’ll help kill the scent so they don’t come back. You can also use aluminum foil temporarily to keep them away. They don’t like the scrunch it makes.

They could also just be mad. Are they getting along? Getting enough lobster? John
