Why do I find so many dead carpet beetles on the carpet floor?

Dee Dee asked:

Other than fabric, what attracts carpet beetles and what can they eat? If I hide anything that attracts them, would less of them come?

My clothes are protected in my drawers, but there are still many carpet beetles (alive and dead) found in my room.

well you shed 100’s of body hairs a day along with skin flakes. If you have pets that is even more food for them. Most people I see vacuum the carpets well, but maybe not under the furniture that has to be moved, over time a large amount of hair can be found. It is only the larva that feed on clothing, so anything made from feather, fur (taxidermy) , hair, wool, silk. can be an issue. They can also be found in cereal products such as dog food if animal oils where used in the making. it is not so much an issue these days but I occasionally come across where cheap rat baits (had animal oils in them) were just thrown up in the attic for rat control, where as the old baits now are a food source all through out the attic above every room. You need to store things you are sure are free from them (after cleaning) in air tight containers, basically Tupperware for clothing. Totes that the handles lock down the lids and zipper bags are not air tight. Lar
